“The Ukrainian Republican Chapel was founded as a representative singing institution whose mission was to expand the art and culture of Ukraine abroad. Under those circumstances, not only artistic commitments but also national and political tasks were imposed on the Chapel. The Chapel was supposed to show Western Europe that Ukrainians are indeed a separate nation with their own culture. The task was not easy because in Western Europe the idea of “Russian people’s unity”, the idea that there was no Ukraine and Ukrainians had been cherished for centuries.”

Symon Narizhnyi | Director of the Museum of Ukraine’s Liberation Struggle in Prague

“He is looking for ways to get closer to the West, trying to show the latter that the threat of Russian imperialism will increase with new rulers. He takes a great initiative and urges on his surrounding not to miss any opportunity to manifest its national name, wherever they can speak about Ukraine. Whether it will be a political community of the League of Nations supporters, or a scientific congress, or an international union of combatants, or an international women’s league, or an engineers’ congress — it makes no difference, Ukrainians must be everywhere, and they should speak about Ukraine. The triumphal trip of the Koshyt’s Chapel that was dispatched on the S. Petliura’s initiative also belongs to this propagandistic goal. Thus, he was looking for a reliable base in the world international reviews.”

Oleksandr Shulhin | Ukrainian Diplomat

“This national choir is a state institution of the Ukrainian Democratic Republic. The founding initiative belongs to the Chief Executive Officer, later Head of the UDR’s Directory Symon Petliura. The choir was founded in January 1919 by the music department at the UDR’s Ministry of Education. Its first task is a concert tour of the European states that were involved in the war, in order to introduce them to the most valuable treasure of the Ukrainian people — their songs, and thus gain sympathy for the freedom-loving Ukrainian people. For the song, as Gogol, one of the most prominent Ukrainian sons, says, is everything for Ukraine: life, history and parental grave. The most important goal of the choir is the international recognition of the Ukrainian Democratic Republic, the step which the Entente still refuses to make. Choir triumphed everywhere, music reviewers unanimously admitted that such a performance was absolutely unparalleled. This artistic success will give the Ukrainian singers the promise that it will serve the political goals of their trip as well.”
